The Spring Green Community Library proudly presents the R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) program for Independent Readers - Grades K-5 in collaboration with Delta Society Pet Partners.  R.E.A.D. was launched by Intermountain Therapy Animals, a nonprofit organization, in 1999 as the first comprehensive literacy program built around the appealing idea of reading to dogs.  Yes, a dog in the library!  R.E.A.D. utilizes registered therapy animals who have been trained and tested for health, safety, appropriate skills and temperament to help children improve reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog!  R.E.A.D. dogs and their owner/handlers are registered volunteers who work as a team, going to schools, libraries and many other settings as reading companions for children.  R.E.A.D. dogs are attentive listeners who transform an environment creating a relaxed, no pressure atmosphere where a child’s fears are replaced by eager anticipation.  The owner/handler, along with their dog, provides support while the child gets supervised reading practice to help build vocabulary, increase understanding of the materials and gain fluency as a reader.   Please contact Brenda Francis, Children’s Librarian, with any questions at 588-2276.
